About the Nursery
I can't talk about the nursery without first mentioning my father, John. In 1990, he was recently divorced and looking to start over so he scrounged up all the money he could and purchased 10 acres of land south of Spokane, WA. He was so poor those first few years he had to live in his car and bath in Marshall Creek that bordered the property before going to work. Undeterred and with very little help, he dug a well and started planting apple trees. At first it was just a few but he liked to joke, “There was no tree planter’s anonymous”, so within just a few years, he was caring for over 500 apple trees and 17 varieties. He eventually named his 10 acres, "Sherman Valley Farm" after word got out that there was a U-pick orchard just 15 minutes from downtown.
As my father’s apple trees matured, I left Spokane to study plant science and horticulture, first at the University of Idaho, then at New Mexico State University where I earned my M.S. degree in 2011. After I graduated, I worked for Tennessee State University at their Nursery Research Center in McMinnville as the area nursery specialist.
In 2020 I moved back to Spokane, and convinced my dad to let me plant some rootstocks so I could play around with grafting techniques and eventually start my own nursery. At first, he was not excited about the idea of a nursery but after watching me care for the trees and seeing them sell, he was on board. The next year he installed an irrigation system and plowed up some more land so we could plant more.
John sadly passed away (in 2025) following a tragic motorcycle accident but the orchard and nursery live on.
